ACI Highway 036 – What is a Carrier Code, and where can I get one for my eManifest?

The Carrier Code is a unique 4-character identifier assigned by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to carriers involved in the transport of commercial goods to or from Canada. This code is required for entry into Canada for companies that operate commercial vehicles for transporting goods. There are two main types of carrier codes: non-bonded and bonded. Non-bonded carrier codes require the shipment to be released at the border upon arrival, while bonded carrier codes allow for the movement of goods to a bonded warehouse or in transit through Canada.

The carrier code application can be found on the CBSA website and the code itself is maintained by the CBSA. The carrier code must be included as the beginning of the conveyance reference number (trip number) in the ACI eManifest and the Cargo Control Number used to identify the shipment. Only eligible companies will be issued a carrier code by the CBSA.
