ACI Highway 052 – When should I use an ATA Carnet?

The ATA Carnet is a widely accepted international customs document that enables the temporary import of goods into a foreign country. As it is recognized by both Canada and the United States, it acts as a shipment type for goods being cleared through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The Carnet is typically used for transporting commercial samples, professional equipment, and goods for use at exhibitions and trade shows. To be eligible for a Carnet, the goods must not be perishable or consumable, such as agricultural products. The length of the temporary importation period can range up to one year, depending on the specified validity period.

The party responsible for importing the goods temporarily should obtain the Carnet and inform the carrier of the shipment type being used. The importer should provide the carrier with the Carnet document as the driver will need to present it at the border.
