ACI eHBL 237 – What are flying trucks, and are they exempt from eHBL filing?

When goods are transported by air using air documentation, such as an air waybill, and then transition to truck transport and arrive at the border by highway mode, this is commonly referred to as “flying trucks.” Essentially, this refers to an MAWB that originates from an airport in the U.S. and arrives in Canada via truck as part of the airline’s flying truck. As of September 18, 2016, flying trucks are exempt from eManifest Highway filing, causing significant difficulties. Currently, a freight forwarder must file an eHBL for air shipments arriving by aircraft and a paper re-manifest for airfreight shipments arriving by truck, which can be problematic to manage.
