ACI eHBL 159 – How do I get a carrier code?

Freight forwarders/NVOCCs need to acquire a four-character CBSA issued carrier code that starts with the number 8. These forwarders/NVOCCs can choose to operate in Canada either as bonded or non-bonded.

To obtain a valid CBSA carrier code, a non-bonded freight forwarder code application form needs to be completed, including a signature and a complete vehicle listing. The form can be found at https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/bsf329-9-16.pdf. Additionally, photocopies of company ownership documents should be included and emailed to carrier-cargo@cbsa.gc.ca.

For supporting documents submitted from outside of Canada, they need to be translated into English or French and certified for authenticity by a certified translator. A notarized copy of the original document requiring translation should also be included. The document in its original language and the certified translated copy must be submitted.
